Midwives in Harrogate are hoping to reduce the percentage of women who smoke whilst pregnant.

They want to reduce the number to 5% by 2020 - currently it's around 8%.

Stopping smoking reduces the risk of complications in pregnancy and birth, you will reduce the risk of stillbirth and your baby is less likely to be born too early and have to face the additional breathing, feeding and health problems that often go with being premature.

Midwives at Harrogate Hospital have had extra training to help women quit.

They also have a number of schemes in place to support pregnant women who smoke.

Lucy Kitching is a Midwife:

"The biggest problem of smoking in pregnancy is it can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

"There's a nationwide campaign to reduce the amount of stillbirths, so by reducing smoking rates hopefully we'll reduce stillbirth rates as well."

For more information on stopping smoking you can contact Lucy directly by emailing lucy.kitching@nhs.net
