WATCH: This poignant artwork commemorating WW1 is drawing in the crowds in Ripon

An artwork to commemorate World War One, created out of mud, is proving popular with visitors to Ripon Cathedral.

"Fields of Mud, Seeds of Hope" has been created using wet soil from one of the largest British military camps of the time, which was based in Ripon, mixed with earth from Passchendaele in Flanders.

Gradually as the soil has dried, it has revealed the image of five silhouettes returning from the front.

The artwork is part of The Ripon Community Poppy Project, which has seen thousands of poppies put up across the city.

Artist Dan Metcalfe is one of the creators of the artwork.

He said:

"People have been coming in and sharing stories. With everything else that's been going on with the poppy project and the silhouettes walk , it's really a topic of conversation.

"It ties so well to the battles of the First World War, how we remember the First World War, we think of trenches and we think of mud and barbed wire. To use actual battlefield soil has been a really cathartic experience. It's been really humbling to use it."
