Harrogate businesses urged to have say on BID before it's too late

Businesses in Harrogate are being urged to have their say on plans for a Business Improvement District - before it's too late.

Business Improvement Districts, or BIDS, have been set up in hundreds of towns and cities across the UK.

Businesses in the designated area are asked to pay an extra rate which generates cash to spend on improvement projects.

Earlier this year a task group was set up to create a Harrogate BID, estimating it could raise £500,000 a year for the business community to spend on improvement projects.

The task group has been working with the affected businesses in the town centre for the last three weeks. They're being asked to vote on the plans, with the result of the vote being announced on Friday afternoon.

The ballot closes at 5pm this Thursday, meaning businesses have to post their votes before this evening.

However, if this deadline is missed, businesses can also hand in their votes at the Hotel DuVin between 8am and 10am on Thursday morning.

Chair of Harrogate BID, John Fox said:

"It's very important that the business community vote. The business community will control the money over the BID's five year life.

"They'll able to use that money to market Harrogate, to bring events and activities into the town centre. They'll be able to use the money to enhance our night time economy."

The votes will be counted by the Electroal Reform Society with the result being announced at approximately 4.30pm on Friday afternoon.
