A rescue centre in Harrogate which adopts dogs in need from a kill shelter Romania is celebrating its first birthday.

Founder Janet McDougall was inspired to build her very own shelter at home, after seeing dogs in "dire" conditions at the Boldesti shelter in Romania.

The Woodfield Dog Rescue is small but perfectly formed, and can house 6 to 7 dogs at a time. In just a year, the shelter has successfully placed 31 dogs in happy homes.

The work doesn't stop there though, Janet also set up the Woodfield Foundation to support the shelter in Romania, funding vital work.

It pays for free spay clinics, food and distance adoptions, which allow the dogs' lives to be extended for 30 days, giving them a chance at life.

Janet said:

"In Boldesti there are now kennels and runs, which are vital to stopping the spread of disease and stopping dogs fighting. They also give protection from the elements - the cold and extreme heat.

"Over the last couple of years, a programme of development has been going on, so it's been transformed."

She added:

"My overall memory of the year has been meeting the most incredible people who have supported us.

"It's all about the dogs - getting them into happy families and them never having a worry again."
