Concerns over proposed location change for Harrogate's Post Office

  • Plans to move Harrogate's post office could result in a loss of services.
  • In addition, there are concerns over future access.
  • Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones is campaigning against the proposed location change.

Plans to move Harrogate's post office could result in a loss of services.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones believes moving the Post Office from Cambridge Road into WHSmith could also create access difficulties for the disabled and elderly.

The town centre post office branch is among many across the country earmarked for closure as part of a new agreement to re-open services in local WHSmiths stores.

Mr Jones said:

"It is a question about what is right for the Post Office. I think the Post Office is part of the glue of a community. It is an important access point to many different services. I think access to it is really really important. It is not at the back or upstairs of a shop or in a different shop completely - it should be a prominent feature of the retail landscape."

Mr Jones launched his own public cobsultation to fight back against the proposed move. The petition, which received over 1,000 signatures, was handed to Royal Mail just before Christmas.

Mr Jones added:

"I hope the Post Office will change their mind. I hope they will listen to the public who have spoken quite clearly on this matter. They do not want it to move."

The Post Office claims that the same products and services will be available in the franchised outlet.
