Knaresborough Gridlock: Water and gas works to blame

Knaresborough Gridlock: Water and gas works to blame

Published by Lisa Darvill at 3:13pm 5th February 2019. (Updated at 3:19pm 5th February 2019)

Gas works and water repairs are the cause of traffic chaos in Knaresborough.

  • There've been road closures on Chain Lane and Forest Lane
  • North Yorkshire County Council says 'planned gas works and emergency water mains repairs' have 'compounded' the queues
  • Chain Lane is open BUT temporary lights are now in use

North Yorkshire County Council highways area manager Melisa Burnham said:

“We are aware of the traffic congestion that occurred in Knaresborough town centre this morning. All relevant utility companies have been contacted and it would appear that planned gas works and emergency water main repairs have compounded the traffic queues.

“Our team is liaising with the utility companies to ensure work is completed as quickly as possible. The utility companies are aware of their impact on the highway network and will ensure collaborative traffic management."

Emergency water mains repairs in Chain Lane are now complete.

However temporary lights are now in use due to gas works at the Chain Lane/Eastfield junction.

Melisa Burnham continued:

"The ongoing gas works at the Chain Lane/Eastfield junction will be under revised traffic management arrangements with manually controlled traffic lights during peak times, which will keep disruption to the travelling public to a minimum.’’

Sewer repair work at the level crossing on Forest Lane are now complete.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said:

“We are pleased to inform that sewer repair work has now completed on Forrest Lane and the road is currently being re-surfaced. We hope to have it re-open very shortly.”
