New scheme to help mums in Ilkley, Craven and Wharfedale

New scheme to help mums in Ilkley, Craven and Wharfedale

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 7:19am 11th February 2019.

A pioneering scheme to support new mums is being rolled out across the Bradford district in Ilkley, Craven and Wharfedale.

  • A new scheme has been launched in Ilkley, Craven and Wharfedale to help new mums in the community
  • The Compassion for Mums Well-being scheme is offering businesses (like cafes, shops and hairdressers) free training to show they welcome and support new mums
  • Window stickers will also be given out, so mums can easily identify baby-friendly venues
  • Mums can also recommend baby-friendly places, who will be encouraged to sign up

The Compassion for Mums Well-being scheme is offering free training and window stickers to cafes, community centres and businesses, to help them provide a welcoming environment for new mums.

Delivered by the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, the scheme aims to educate workers about how best to support new mums - from opening doors, to not clearing tables too quickly if a mum is in the toilet changing her baby.

Jo Jones, a community nursery nurse for Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, is urging businesses to sign up.

She said:

"Perinatal mental health can affect anybody unfortunately, and isolation is a growing issue.

"The scheme just gives businesses a bit of awareness about what it takes for a mum to get out of the house.

"It might have been their third attempt to get out that morning - they may have had two or three changes of clothes, let alone the baby's clothes.

"It might have been something a mum has been putting off for weeks but they've finally plucked up the courage to do something.

"A friendly face is so important the other end".

Businesses and organisations who sign up (free of charge) can show they welcome and support new mums by displaying an easily recognisable Compassion for Mums Well-being sticker.

Mums can also nominate places where they have felt supported and welcomed.

To get in touch with the scheme and to find out more information, visit the Compassion for Mums Well-being page, and email compassionformumswell-being@bdct.nhs.uk.
