Recycle your crisp packets for a free game of crazy golf!

Ready salted crisps

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 5:08pm 6th March 2019. (Updated at 12:50pm 12th March 2019)

A project in Ripon is encouraging local people to recycle their used crisp packets to reduce waste and raise money for charity.

  • Inspired by a previous initiative to make Ripon plastic free, this new project is based at the Sun Parlour Cafe, Ripon Spa Gardens.
  • Children can enjoy a free game of crazy golf if they bring in 50 empty crisp packets.
  • The packets will be made into plastic pellets, and any profit will go towards improving Ripon's Christmas lights.

Adults and children are getting involved with a simple new scheme which offers people the chance to send their empty crisp packets to be recycled.

This is currently the only site in Ripon offering the service.

Caroline Bentham, who is  the owner of the Sun Parlour Cafe in Ripon, explains the process:

"People are saving crisp packets and bringing me them by the big bag full.

"I am then taking them home, squashing them as hard as I can into cardboard boxes, sending them through UPS who are delivering them back to Terracycle.

The crisp packets will be recycled by Terracycle who are working with Walkers crisps.

This partnership was partly started due to a national protest in which people posted used crisp packets back to the manufacturer last year.

The Sun Parlour Cafe in Ripon is the only location in the city where the recycling is currently possible which utilises a free courier service.

The empty packets will be made into plastic pellets which can then be made into other items.

Profits are also possible too as Terracycle pay £2 per 2kg of empty crisp packets.

The scheme is currently donating the money to the Ripon Christmas lights fund.

Schools from the Ripon area are now getting involved:

  • Grewelthorpe C of E School
  • Moorside Infant and Juniors
  • Holy Trinity C of E Juniors
  • Outwood Primary Academy Greystone
  • St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary
  • Burneston C of E Primary
  • Ripley C of E Primary
  • Burton Leonard C of E Primary

Caroline who is organising the recycling also has a special opportunity for participants:

"I've said that if kids save me 50 packets, if they bring them in they can have a free game of crazy golf!

"They think it's amazing and are making sure they keep the crisp packets."
