Storm Gareth is causing some disruption in parts of Harrogate, Ripon and Skipton this afternoon.

  • In Harrogate, Waitrose car park is currently closed
  • The store says it's a precaution due to a risk of slates falling off the roof in high winds
  • It's apologising and says the supermarket is still open to customers
  • In Ripon, a man has been rescued after his car became stuck in a ford

In Harrogate, Waitrose car park is currently closed due to the high winds.

The store has told Stray FM this is due to the risk of slates falling off the roof

It follows a recent inspection by a surveyor of some ongoing work to the roof of the building.

Branch manager Phil Wilson said the decision's being taken "due to that report and due to the risk of slates falling off the roof in high winds."

He told Stray FM:

"It's just a precaution and we can't take the risk due to the history of the roof.

"It's obviously not ideal for us or our customers, but in the circumstances, we can't do anything else.

"We will review it and get it open as soon as we can."

Waitrose is still open and pedestrians can access the store via the exit ramp.

In Ripon, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has rescued a driver from a car after it became stuck in a ford.

A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said:

"Crews were called at 4pm to reports of a vehicle in water in Ripon.

"Water rescue crews waded through the water and were able to attach a winch to the vehicle.

"They then the winched the vehicle from the water."

Earlier today Heslaker Lane was reportedly impassible due to flooding.

The fire service has tweeted this picture of flooding on Pale Lane:

However earlier disruption to trains between Skipton and Carlisle, caused by flooding, has now ended.

Storm Gareth is currently affecting most of the UK.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings of wind for today and Wednesday.
