Firefighters using helicopters to tackle large Ilkley Moor fire

West Yorkshire Fire say they are using a helicopter to tackle the fire, along with 12 appliances and 3 jets. 

 

Moorland fire, Ilkley

  • Crews are dealing with a fire on moorland near Ilkley.
  • A blaze on Ilkley Moor broke out this afternoon (Saturday, 20 April).
  • Firefighters are continuing to battle the flames this evening.

A fire has broken out on moorland near Ilkley as temperatures soared earlier.

The blaze involves several acres of moorland above White Wells in Ilkley.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) are battling the flames at the scene on Ilkley Moor. They are being assisted by a number of crews from North Yorkshire who are working alongside teams trying to bring the fire under control.

It started this afternoon (Saturday, 20 April) and continues to burn this evening.

Martyn Hughes of North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue tweeted: "The intense heat, steep slopes and rough terrain are causing the fire to spread rapidly whilst we try to get near the flames."
