Harrogate College sold to Luminate Education Group who own Leeds City College

  • Harrogate College has been sold.
  • It'll now become part of the Luminate Education Group - which is one of the largest further education providers in the North.
  • Luminate currently runs Leeds City College and Keighley College among others.
  • Principal at Harrogate College Kevin Williams said the move gives them the opportunity to share best practice.

Regional decision-makers have given the green light for Leeds City College to buy Harrogate College.

Luminate Education Group, the company which owns Leeds City College, agreed to acquire the institution from the Hull College Group late last month.

However, permission had to be granted by region-wide super-council West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), as it recently gave a multi-million pound grant to Leeds City College in order to help it build its Quarry Hill site.

Colin Booth, CEO at Luminate Education Group said last month:

“Welcoming Harrogate College to the group is another step forward and will mean benefits for both students and staff. This news will mean that Luminate Education Group has responsibility for 30,000 students in total, further proving our role in nurturing the skills for the future in Yorkshire, and beyond.”

Since 2008, Harrogate College has been owned by Hull College Group.

However, Luminate Education Group has acquired the institution - though the exact amount paid for the college is unclear.

It's understood all 164 staff from Harrogate College will transfer across to Leeds City College and it'll be business as usual.

Kevin Williams, Principal at Harrogate College said:

“The college has benefited from the expertise of Hull College Group over a number of years. There is a great opportunity for us in the Luminate Education Group arising from geographic proximity and the opportunity to share best practice.  Our recent campus redevelopment, alongside this news, puts us in great shape for the future.”

The plans have been assessed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and the Further Education (FE) Commissioner, with the official move from Hull College expected to take place on August 1.
