A group of Otley women are getting ready to 'brave the shave' for a cancer charity.

  • Rachel Kerr, her sister Emma and best friend Hazel are going to shave off all their hair for charity
  • They trio say they've lost many family and friends to the disease
  • They'll 'brave the shave' at a charity fundraising event on June 1st at Otley Social Club

Rachel Kerr, her sister Emma and friend Hazel are shaving off all of their hair to fundraise for Cancer Research UK

The trio will 'brave the shave' at a community event on 1st June at Otley Social Club.

The women have organised a bake sale, raffles, tombola, bouncy castle ,pony rides, food and stalls to help raise as much money as possible.

Rachel says she has lost a lot of family and friends to cancer.

She said:

"We lost our uncle early on this year, which obviously hit home quite hard.

"We've lost my granddads to cancer and I can go on and on.

"I have an auntie who's fighting cancer at the minute as well.

"We've got survivors shaving our heads. It's an amazing thing that they've said they would do that."

Rachel says it was her uncle's death earlier this year that got her thinking about fundraising.

She added:

"For us to actually make a difference we thought about doing something different that not many people do.

"It was a light bulb moment. I woke up one morning and I thought what can I do to make a difference? I thought let's shave my hair off.

"I thought I'd be nervous but I'm not, I'm really excited!

"I spend a lot of money a year on my hair and I love my hair, but I'm one of the lucky ones because my hair can grow back.

"Shaving it off is nothing major, I just think it's something that will help."

The event on 1st June at Otley Social Club is taking place between 11am and 6pm, with the shave taking place at 12 noon
