  • The 'Early Bird Running Crew' which was set up only last month now attracts hundreds of people across the week.
  • The group run either 5k or 10k at 6am or 6.30am every morning.
  • All abilities are welcome.

A Facebook community for runners in Harrogate is continuing to grow in popularity.

Launched only last month (May), the 'Early Bird Runnng Crew' now has over 450 members.

It encourages people to get some exercise before work, every week day morning, through either a 5 or 10k run.

A keen runner himself, Ben Davis launched the group in May:

"I wanted to set something up in Harrogate for people to run together - every time you go out you see people running on their own. So I set up the 'Early Bird Running Crew' where we meet every week day morning and go and run a 5k or 10k run together.

"In week four, we had 38 runners at the Friday, 6.30am meet. In the first month, we have had hundreds of people taking part across the weekly sessions. It's proving popular."

The group meet at the Centaph in Harrogate at 6am or 6.30am every morning.

Ben says being active has so many benefits:

"Running in the morning is hugely beneficial. We're all such busy people - we often get 10 or 11 hours into our day before we get any time to ourselves. It's great to get up an hour earlier, get outside in the fresh air, meet people and have a chat and run. It's good for us in many ways - both physically and mentally."

The 'Early Bird Running Crew' community on Facebook now has over 450 members and continues to grow.

The group run around the Stray.

Ben says everyone encourages each other:

"Every day, you can hear the watches stopping and people saying 'wow, i've got a PB' - it's such a good feeling and people giving each other high fives. It's a real good mix of abilities too. If you run 5k every day, Monday to Friday, you are going to notice a change in your running ability."
