Businesses launch free parking in Harrogate idea

  • A petition calling for free parking in Harrogate's been signed up almost 1,400 people.
  • It's been launched by 30 businesses who want free parking periouds introduced to help struggling retailers.
  • One idea is to allow shoppers to park for three hours for free.

A petition calling for free parking in Harrogate's been launched.

30 businesses in the town centre are behind it.

They're calling for charges to be scrapped, allowing shoppers to park for 3 hours in key streets for free.

They claim the move which has been introduced in other towns will help struggling retailers.

Nearly 1,400 people have so far signed it.

Those behind the petition claim a 'Free 3 Hour Parking Allowance on Harrogate streets will:

  • Save people money
  • Make parking more convenient
  • Boost foot-fall
  • Increase shop revenues
  • Counteract shop closures
  • Support independent businesses
  • Support vital local jobs
  • Support favourite eating destinations
  • Reduce the threat of declining house prices
  • Help town to thrive

Only last week, Harrogate BID revealed results of a recent survey which highlighted parking charges as a concern for local businesses.

114 traders took part in the questionnaire - with 70 per cent claim the high car parking charges were a concern.

The results were then presented to senior representatives from North Yorkshire County Council.
