A national approach in tackling stalking is needed - according to the father of a woman murdered by an ex-boyfriend

  • More still needs to be done to tackle stalking, according to the father of a woman killed by an ex-boyfriend.
  • Clive Ruggles has been sharing Alice's story at a Safeguarding event in Harrogate.
  • The 24 year old was murdered by a former partner after he stalked her for 3 months.
  • Clive is calling for a national approach in dealing with stalking.
  • He also thinks a stalking register would help stop further harassment.

The father of woman murdered after being subjected to months of stalking has been speaking in Harrogate.

Clive Ruggles has been sharing Alice's story.

The 24-year-old was killed by an ex-boyfriend in 2016.

Since then, her family have been campaigning for changes to the law and greater understanding of stalking.

Speaking at a safeguarding event at the Pavilions, Clive is calling for a stalking register:

"In Alice's case, that would have helped if a connection to a previous issue where the man in question had a restraining order issued against him two years earlier. If it had been possible to make that connection then the response to Alice's situation may have been different."

Clive's been speaking at a Safeguarding event which has taken place at The Pavilions of Harrogate.

The University professor is calling for more to be done on stop stalking and harrassment - inparticular more training for those who are on the frontline:

"On one occasion when Alice called the police, you can hear the fear in her voice. But she's almost apologetic - she's not called the police saying 'I'm really frightened'. She simply says 'I just want some advice'. Alice is almost trying not to waste their time for phoning them. That person on the other end of the phone has about 60 - 90 seconds to recognise that this could be something serious. With more training, they will be able to identify that."

Clive says more help and support is also needed for those convicted of stalking:

"If he had been charged with stalking, he could have had a prison sentence of 10 years. But some of these fixations don't go away so when we start to convict people with stalking - as we should and will - we have a big issue about how to manage the perpetrators when they come out of jail."

Clive set up the Alice Ruggles Trust to raise awareness of coercive control and stalking to ensure that relevant legislation is effective and adhered to and to bring about lasting improvements in the management of perpetrators and protection of victims.
