Weather warning for thunderstorms still in place

Weather warning for thunderstorms still in place

Published by Lisa Darvill at 9:19am 11th July 2019. (Updated at 11:12am 11th July 2019)

A yellow weather warning remains in force this afternoon for thunderstorms.

  • The warning covers all of Harrogate and Wharfedale from 1pm until 9pm
  • The Met Office says there could be some travel disruption and flooding in places
  • It's ahead of thunderstorms on this afternoon and evening

The Met Office says the storms may cause some travel disruption and flooding in places.

It adds whilst many areas will miss the heaviest rain, where heavy showers and thunderstorms do develop they will be slow-moving bringing the potential for 20-30 mm of rain in an hour and 40-50 mm in 2-3 hours.

The warning area covers all of the Harrogate District and Wharfedale. However, the Met Office does not believe Skipton will be affected.

It says we could expect:

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
