First spot on the Harrogate Monopoly Board revealed

The first spot on the Harrogate Monopoly Board has gone to the Harrogate Homeless Project!

Harrogate Homeless Project
  • Harrogate's very own edition of the board game will be released in October.
  • Members of the public voted online for which organisations and landmarks will make it.
  • The Harrogate Homeless Project will feature on a Community Chest space.

The Harrogate Homeless Project has topped a public poll to land a Community Chest space on the new Harrogate Monopoly board game.

The project was founded in 1991, staffed by volunteers and co-ordinated by churches. Since then, it's expanded as the demand has increased.

As well as running a 16-bed hostel for homeless people, the charity offers support for homeless people with more complex needs, including offering a psychotherapy service.

The charity's Chief Executive, Liz Hancock, told Stray FM everyone at the charity was honoured that the public had voted for them.

She also said she hopes it will raise the profile of homelessness:

"This game will be bought and sent to friends and relatives who are no longer living in the district. In that respect it will keep homelessness in the forefront of people wherever they are playing the game.

"This edition will be in people's games cupboards for years to come and played by generations, and I just think that's a lovely legacy for the Homeless Project to have a spot on that.

"The name of the project says who we are and what we do - we help homeless people in the Harrogate district. It's there on the board and it doesn't need any explanation - it'll just keep that in the forefront of people's minds.

"That is actually genuinely it. I think it's really exciting!"
