Foodbank may struggle to meet Summer demand

Foodbank may struggle to meet Summer demand

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 11:42am 19th July 2019.

Harrogate District Foodbank is gearing up for an increase in demand over Summer

  • Families who rely on free school meals often have to turn to foodbanks whenever their kids aren't at school.
  • Harrogate District Foodbank experienced a dip in donations last summer.
  • Stray FM's been told about the impact of stigma around using foodbanks.

Last summer, Harrogate District Foodbank saw an increase in demand for the service.

It follows a national increase in demand for foodbanks every school holiday period as families who rely on free school meals provision turn to foodbanks to cope.

However, at the same time as demand increased, the team received fewer donations of food.

Harrogate District Foodbank's project manager, Lucy Stewart, told Stray FM:

"We started to run out of food.

"This year we've been a bit more proactive in that and we're still appealing for food to see us through the summer.

"People tend to go on holiday - their shopping habits change over the summer. They may be struggling a little bit more themselves - those people who regularly donate maybe need that extra money to feed their family over the summer."

This isn't the only challenge. According to Lucy, there's a huge stigma around using foodbanks.

She told us it makes people reluctant to use the service.

"It'll be later on in the Summer holidays as we get into August - that's when we see an increase.

"When they first come in for the first time I think it's hard for them - they put it off and they put it off until they're really desperate.

"They've really come to the end of themselves and they're ashamed."

Referrals are made to the service by over a hundred different agencies, including healthcare services, local schools and community centres.
