Harrogate Foodbank calls for cash donations to meet summer demand

Published by Lisa Darvill at 7:16am 22nd July 2019. (Updated at 7:21am 22nd July 2019)

Harrogate District Foodbank is calling for cash donations in order to meet an increased demand over the summer.

As well as calling for more donations of food, the service says it needs help fundraising as well.

Last summer, Harrogate District Foodbank says it saw an increase in demand for the service.

It follows a national increase in demand for foodbanks every school holiday period as families who rely on free school meals provision turn to foodbanks to cope.

However, at the same time as demand increased, the team received fewer donations.

Harrogate District Foodbank's project manager, Lucy Stewart, told Stray FM:

"We started to run out of food.

"This year we've been a bit more proactive in that and we're still appealing for food to see us through the summer.

"People tend to go on holiday - their shopping habits change over the summer. They may be struggling a little bit more themselves - those people who regularly donate maybe need that extra money to feed their family over the summer."

Referrals are made to the service by over a hundred different agencies, including healthcare services, local schools and community centres.

But Lucy says it's not just donations of food they need.

She added:

"We've had to increase our warehouse space because of the demand.

"Where we are now, we're having to pay rent, so our running costs have gone up.

"So we are trying to engage with more people who might like to doing a sponsored event for us."
