Yorkshire Dales named one of UK's top sites to visit

The Yorkshire Dales National Park has today been named one of the UK’s top places to visit.

  • It appears in a list of the 500 'most memorable, beautiful, surprising and compelling sights' across Great Britain by Lonely Planet
  • It's come in 18th place
  • The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has taken the top spot
  • Other sites in Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale made the list including Malham Cove, Fountains Abbey and Mother Shipton's cave
  • In total, 37 sites in Yorkshire made the list

For the first time, Lonely Planet’s community of travel experts have chosen the best sights and experiences and ranked them  in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate United Kingdom Travelist.

In 18th position is the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

It's welcome news for the Dales, which was badly hit by flash flooding earlier this month.

Leyburn, Grinton, Swaledale and Wensleydale were all affected.

Lonley Planet praised the Yorkshire Dales for its:

“Picture-postcard villages of honey-coloured stone... sheep grazing on the green, set against a distinctive landscape of flat-topped hills, stepped skylines and broad valleys patchworked with lush pastures”.

A number of other sites including Malham Cove, Fountains Abbey and Mother Shipton's Cave made the list.

Full list of entries in Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale by rank:

18:          Have an outdoor adventure in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
77:          Gape at the vista of spectacular Malham Cove
252:        Be part of the Tour de Yorkshire cycling spectacular
280:        Find watery wonder at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal
322:        Wish in Mother Shipton's Cave
349:        Tuck into traditional afternoon tea at Betty's of Harrogate
352:        Refresh yourself with a wild swim near Grassington
458:        Flex green fingers at Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens
478:        Take in Yorkshire from a grand height
496:        Learn to churn at Wensleydale Creamery

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes the top spot in the list.

In total, 37 sights and experiences in Yorkshire feature in the list, including York Minster and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

To create Lonely Planet’s Ultimate United Kingdom Travelist, the Lonely Planet team compiled every highlight from the Lonely Planet guidebooks to Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Everybody in Lonely Planet’s UK community was asked to vote for their top 20 experiences. With hundreds of votes cast, Lonely Planet ended up with a score for each of the 500 experiences in the book.

Lonely Planet’s VP of Experience, Tom Hall, said:

"Lonely Planet’s Ultimate United Kingdom Travelist brings together the UK’s most compelling sights and experiences, ranging from world-class museums and giant cathedrals to rollicking festivals, inky lochs and tiny pubs. We’re thrilled to name the Yorkshire Dales National Park as one of the UK’s very best sights, alongside many other experiences in Yorkshire. The Dales are completely captivating and offer some of Britain’s best walking, mountain biking, caving and wild swimming."
