Volunteers: key to UCI Road World Championships

  • Over 2,000 volunteers will give their time for free during the International cycling contest.
  • They will be known as 'Yorkshire Champions'.
  • From interpreters to marshals, they'll take on a range of roles.
  • The Yorkshire Team uniform is bright red and is sponsored and supported by Harrogate-based brand Yorkshire Tea.
  • The 9-day event kicks off on Saturday (21 September) - all UCI information found here.
  • The Fan Zone is expected to welcome around 45,000 people during the competition.

There will be over 2,000 'Yorkshire Champion' volunteers to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

Described as the linchpin of any big event, UCI organisers say volunteers will have a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity in an event that is returning to Great Britain for the first time since 1982.

Volunteers give their time and effort to help other people out, which is a completely lovely thing to do.

The band of dedicated volunteers who will bring a proper Yorkshire welcome to all riders and spectators for what promises to be the greatest sporting spectacle of the year.

They will take up a diverse range of roles from interpreters for the 80 nations due to take part, to marshals along the routes which take in all four corners of Yorkshire.

During the run up to the global event, the volunteers will be given the highest standard of training, kitted out with uniform and invited to a series of planned dedicated events.

But how do we identify the volunteers?

All volunteers will be wearing an official Yorkshire Team kit - alongside some accreditation material to wear when they're on duty.

It's bright red and helps them to stand out - should anyone need any help.

Volunteers will be helping out across the 9-day event, which runs from 21-29 September.

Speaking back in November 2018, when organisers launched an appeal for volunteers, Yorkshire 2019 CEO Andy Hindley said:

"Volunteering will play a vital role in both the delivery and the legacy of Yorkshire 2019.

"We want to involve as many local people as possible in the World Championships and there is no better way to do that than by becoming a Yorkshire Champion."
