Otley gearing up for UCIs

Otley gearing up for UCIs

Published by Harry Long at 11:54am 18th September 2019. (Updated at 11:56am 18th September 2019)

Otley is getting ready to 'Welcome the World' - as the  UCI Road World Championships begin this Sunday.

  • The UCI Road World Championships begin this Sunday.
  • The women's and men's elite races pass through the town on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September.
  • Otley will be decked out in Yorkshire flags, and pubs and cafes have been re-named after various countries.

The eight-day event will culminate with both the women’s and men’s elite races passing through Otley on Saturday September 28 and Sunday September 29 respectively.

The town's streets will be lined with Yorkshire flags, while fans from visiting nations will find a home-from-home welcome in the town’s pubs and some cafés which have been re-named after various countries for the event thanks to an initiative by Otley Pub Club.  You can read more about it here.

Cycling fans visiting the town to see the two elite races will also get to meet some of their sporting heroes on Saturday, September 28. A special National Lottery Fan Activation Zone right next to the action at the United Reformed Bridge Church on Bridge Street will feature former Olympians who will be signing autographs and posing for pictures with the public. The zone is set to open for two hours before and two hours after the women’s race passes through Otley at around noon.

Otley has a long reputation as a cycling town and is also the birthplace of former World Champion Lizzie Deignan. It was dubbed the ‘cycling capital of the UK’ by ITV commentators at the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire.

Chair of Otley Town Council Ray Georgeson said:

“As one of Yorkshire and the country’s better know cycling towns, Otley welcomes the UCI World Championships to the county this month. The town will be a fantastic spot for fans to base themselves in pubs decked out in their home country’s colours, while we provide a great spot to watch both the men’s and women’s elite races on the days when the programme ventures out of Harrogate. With a number of meetings, screenings and social rides throughout the competition, we hope cycling fans from around the world will choose to visit Otley and sample our real Yorkshire welcome.”
