LIVE: UCI Road World Championships - Day 8

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 7:34pm 27th September 2019. (Updated at 5:32pm 28th September 2019)

Lizzie Deignan took on home roads as the Women's Elite Road Race took the scenic route from Bradford to Harrogate

And that's it!

All the roads are re-opened, and it's hugs all round...

We'll be back tomorrow morning from around 8 o'clock for all the live updates from the last day of the UCI Road World Championships.

Wellies and walking boots are a must.

Don't say we haven't warned you!

And with a weather warning in place tomorrow, it's more important than ever...

Bands take to the stage in Ripon

Stray FM's Pete Egerton is on hosting duty for the evening...

Parliament Street Re-opens

Harrogate Circuit Fully Re-opened

...along with the Ripon Road sector.

And it's ahead of schedule!

"I feel so privileged to have been part of a home world championships"

Otley's own Lizzie Deignan may have finished in 31st place, but that doesn't make it any less of a huge achievement for her - and an honour to cycle through her home town.

As for Lizzie's priority when she finished?

Harrogate Circuit Crossing points open

Crossing points along the circuit and on the Ripon Road sector.

They should be fully open within the hour.

We're not crying, you are...

Lots of activities underway in Ripon

After the City hosted the elite women earlier on today, there's loads going on for locals to get up to...

And Stray FM's Pete Egerton and David Whittle are there into the evening...

Lizzie Deignen finished in 31st place

5 minutes after the leader.

Considering all of the pressure on her, we think she's done Yorkshire proud.

Van Vleuten officially a winner!

Congratulations Annemiek van Vleuten!

Annemiek van Vleuten guaranteed a win?

With one more lap and a 2 minute lead, it seems the gold medal is already heading to Van Vleuten, who's been leading the race for almost a hundred kilometres.

Stray FM's Nick Hancock is waiting for her at the finish line...

In terms of silver, it looks like it'll be her team-mate...

All rolling road closures now lifted

The Harrogate Circuit and Ripon Road remain closed.

Fingers crossed for Lizzie

There's plenty of support for Lizzie Deignen as she rides around the final Harrogate circuit.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely she'll make the podium...

Harrogate, you're lovely aren't you?

As the women's elite race enters the town, the people of Harrogate are out giving them a proper Yorkshire welcome.

And don't forget the fan zone! There's plenty of entertainment available on The Stray...

Was this all planned for leader Van Vleuten?

Apparently the rider currently at the front of the pack "had a plan" last night.

Seems that's working then...

Can she do it?

Running behind schedule

It means the roads won't be re-opened on time.

Lizzie's slipping back

It looks like Lizzie Deignen's falling back and is unlikely to close the gap as the elite women continue around the Harrogate circuit.

Hope's not over yet - she could still make the podium, but it's less likely than it was ten minutes ago.

Harrogate welcomes the women's elite road race!

Today's riders have started on the Harrogate Circuit...

Lizzie starts to chase down the leader

Otley's own Lizzie Deignan just stepped up the pace in a bid to close the 1-and-three-quarters minute gap between her chase group and leader Dutch Annemiek van Vleuten.

We're out in Ripon!

Make sure you say hi to the Stray FM Team...

Traffic management... in place in Harrogate at the moment.

So near and yet so far...

Imagine being the peloton in this situation - seeming like you're close to the people in front then remembering there's a huge valley in between...and of course, that means a massive hill to climb...

Will Smith's biggest fan...

Apparently BBC Sport's Clare Balding is Stray FM's number one fan...

Ripping up the Ripon roads...

The riders have arrived in Ripon, where loads of people have turned out to see the action!

In case ewe forgot we're in North Yorkshire...

This is just baa-rilliant.

Don't ask me to apologise: I wool not.

Hello Masham!

The racers are riding through the town!

That means they'll soon be in West Tanfield...

Harrogate Circuit now fully closed

Crossing points are due to open at 4.10pm, with the route fully opening after 5.

Pateley Bridge looking glorious...

Pateley looked fantastic earlier as the race passed through.

Roads in the town should be opening up very soon if they're not already.

It's all going off in the fan zone...

Right. Ok.

Stray FM's Tom is heading to the fan zone to look for freebies - we'll let you know if he's successful!

Lizzie's going for it...

Lizzie Deignan's showing the advantage of racing on home soil, making the steep hills look easy!

Isn't Yorkshire pretty?

It's been great to see the beautiful Yorkshire countryside on a world stage this week.

Make sure you share any pictures on social media - use the hashtag #Yorkshire2019 and tag @StrayFM!

Pateley Bridge - you're on!

The riders have reached Pateley!

Masham roads closing

Roads in Masham are sue to close in just a few minutes, but meanwhile the A59 is open at Menwith Hill.

Wellies are required

We've heard that the fan zone in Harrogate is a bit squelchy underfoot...

Prepared for snow...

There may be a weather warning for rain in place for the area tomorrow, but it's good to know the council's prepared for....snow?

Roads opening in Menston and Otley

But there are still delays.

Confirmed: The Peloton are good eggs

They held back so Lizzie Deignan could have a moment of glory cycling through her hometown.

Bradford Buses Back in Business

After major disruption this morning, there's an update...

We're in love with Marjorie and Ray

Lizzie Deignan's grandparents watched her lead the race through her hometown of Otley, and it seems all the other riders let her through for that moment.

Now Marjorie and Ray need to cross the road and hot-foot it to the finish line to watch Lizzie finish the race.

Rolling road closures are on...

Full details are on Stray FM's UCI Guide to Day 8.

We're officially underway and heading for Otley

The neutral stage has finished and the riders are now heading for Lizzie Deignan's home town.

Harrogate Circuit & Ripon Road closed...

Crossing points will be open until 1.30pm, but the roads won't be back open until after 5pm this evening.

If you're along the route today, look out for the publicity caravan - it's essentially a bunch of companies giving away free stuff and getting everyone excited ahead of the race passing through.

The all-important number - 62

If you're looking out for Lizzie Deignan along the route today, she's in the team GB jersey with that number on it - 62.

Otley's pubs are getting in the international spirit...

With riders from across the world riding through the town this afternoon, its pubs are all taking on a different country as its theme.

Have you got a favourite?

And they're off!

The longest ever UCI women's elite road race has started.

The riders are riding for 20 minutes on the neutral start, before the flag's officially dropped at midday.

Yorkshire's ready for our very own Lizzie Deignan

PLUS, we've met someone quite special in Otley...

Want to watch the race?

All of the races will be shown at the fan zone on The Stray, and there are various specified viewing points along the route to watch the riders in the flesh.

The race gets underway in just over ten minutes.

Leeds Cares out supporting Lizzie Deignan

The UCI Road World Championships' official fundraising partner are out in Lizzie's hometown getting ready to support her later on.

The Leeds Cares team chatted to Stray FM's Tom Harland earlier on...

Lofthouse Summit Closed

It's in addition to the rolling road closures in place...

Road closures

We'll be keeping you updated with these throughout the day.

So far....

  • Bradford: Roads are already closed, and will be until about 2pm.
  • Shipley & Menston: Roads will start closing in about half an hour, and will re-open at 12.30pm.
  • Otley & Farnley: Closures will be coming in from 11.30, for an hour, ending around 12.30pm.

Roads are on a rolling closure, so they may close and re-open slightly earlier or later than planned - keep your eyes peeled for the 'race end' car.

Check out Stray FM's full guide to Day 8, which includes full road closure info.

What's Sunderland got to do with it?

Well. I did promise random facts a few minutes ago on Twitter...

So, here goes. The race route today is 149.4 kilometres, which is about 93 miles.

That's equivalent to...

  • 10,671 average-length town buses
  • 5976 blue whales in single file
  • The most direct driving route from Bradford to Sunderland!

The route...

The most direct route from Bradford to Harrogate is around 20 miles (32km), but today's race route is almost 5 times that, at around 93 miles (149.4km).

They're taking a scenic route. A very scenic route, including cycling around in circles three times.

Here's the full route:

Elite women road race map
