We now know the WINNERS of the Best of Skipton and Beyond awards!

  • For the third year running, Stray FM has held its annual Best of Skipton and Beyond awards.
  • There were 10 categories in total.
  • Independent shops and businesses, charities and even individuals have been recognised.
  • Stray FM received a record number of nominations.

The WINNERS of Stray FM's Best of Skipton and Beyond awards have been revealed.

Earlier, all nominees of the 10 categories gathered at The Coniston Hotel in Skipton to celebrate the very best of the town and its surrounding villages.



With a record number of nominations, all those shortlisted for an award are ALL winners - having being put forward by their own customers and Stray FM listeners.

However, each category has been won by one business, charity or indivdual:


Best New Business


“Bigwigs helps those who have suffered from hair loss for whatever reason. From personal experience, owner Jane wants to help fellow  sufferers a chance to feel normal”


Best Event Attraction

Skipton Christmas Lights switch on

“The 2018 Christmas Lights switch on linked up with the Santa fun run in this year resulting in over 2000 santas and over 18,000 people coming into support the event. The feedback from residents and local businesses was phenomenal”


Best Community Project

Settle Hydro

“This pioneering hydroelectric scheme is  in its 10th year now and  provides environmentally clean energy to Settle and the surrounding areas. It was one of the first of its kind in the UK and many international organisations look to them for inspiration in developing their own sustainable energy projects”      


Best shop / retailer

The Stripey Badger

“The Stripey badger is a book shop, coffee shop and kitchen combined! They have become a huge part of their community organising bear hunts, book signings and meet the author events to name a few. It’s a friend to its customers and a refuge for the lonely, a place which inspires imagination!”


Best Customer Service

Dynley House Surgery

“Dynley House surgery has been recognised as outstanding by the care quality commissions this year which only 4% of practices in the UK achieve. The practice team go above and beyond every day to offer outstanding customer service”


Best Place to Eat

“The food is AMAZING, fresh, delicious and great value. They go out of their way to make their customers feel welcome, their chef is passionate about food and customers have said their fresh fish pie, nachos and sticky toffee pud are the best they’ve ever tasted”

Team of the Year

The Principle Trust Children's charity

“This incredible team work hard to provide holidays and respite breaks for children and families who are disadvantaged, under privileged or disabled in some way.   They have to raise over £44,000 each year to fund their holiday homes through fundraising”


Unsung Hero

Gillian Birks

“Gill is the volunteer chair of Glusburn Community and Arts Centre. Her unwavering dedication and drive has secured a £130,000 grant to fund wheelchair access throughout and new facilities for groups and activities, Gill does all of this voluntarily for the good of the  local community”
