Yorkshire Comic Art Festival comes to Harrogate

Yorkshire Comic Art Festival comes to Harrogate

Published by May Norman at 9:31am 5th November 2019.

Calling all comic fans

  • The Yorkshire Comic Art Festival is in Harrogate.
  • It's the first time it's taking place in the town - with the two-day event held at Harrogate Convention Centre on Saturday and Sunday (9 and 10 November).
  • Libraries around Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale are hosting events.
  • A free comic is available - on a first come, first served basis.

Customers at Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and Skipton libraries and Bilton and Woodfield Community Library will be able to pick up a free comic from Friday, 8 November.

The giveaway is in conjunction with Thought Bubble, the Yorkshire Comic Art Festival, which this year is taking place in Harrogate for the first time, with a two-day event at Harrogate Convention Centre on Saturday and Sunday (9 and 10 November).

The libraries have teamed up with Thought Bubble, Diamond Comics and Travelling Man to offer free comics and graphic novels for people to take home and read or give to a friend.

Comics will be available on a first come, first served basis and include titles from major publishers such as Marvel and DC and stories featuring characters including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Avengers, the X-Men, Tomb Raider, Transformers and many others.

Thought Bubble events will run in various parts of Yorkshire in the week leading up to the convention, and the giveaway is one of several fringe events being held by libraries.

These began last week with a sold-out comic art workshop at Harrogate library with Regie Rigby, owner of Destination Venus comic shop in Harrogate.

On Wednesday morning (6 November) Bilton and Woodfield Community Library will host Regie, who will run a comic art workshop for 32 children from Richard Taylor Primary School, and on the evening of the same day at Skipton library, comic book artist Dr Simpo will work with an invited group of young people on animation, helping participants to bring their own worlds to life.

Chrys Mellor, General Manager Libraries, said:

“Comics are not only fun, but can be a great way for children to develop their love of reading, so this giveaway is not to be missed. The county’s libraries have an extensive range of comics and graphic novels for children and adults, so anyone who enjoys comics or wants to rediscover them should visit their library or search our online catalogue to find out what they can borrow.”

More information can be found at your local library and about Thought Bubble.
