Nearly £500k for Ilkley Lido

Nearly £500k for Ilkley Lido

Lido investment welcomed

  • Nearly half a million pounds is set to be invested in Ilkley Lido.
  • Bradford Council has welcomed the plans - but has been urged to help boost neighbouring facilities too.
  • The popular pool attracts hundreds of visitors a day over the summer with some councillors claiming the pavilion at the site should also be regenerated.

A £460,000 investment in Ilkley Lido has been welcomed, but Bradford Council has been urged to help boost neighbouring facilities.

The authority recently announced funding to replace the pool tank at the Lido – which has not been replaced since its opening in 1935.

At a meeting of the Council’s Executive a local Councillor supported the investment, but said more could be done to regenerate the popular attraction, which attracts hundreds of visitors a day over summer.

Councillor Kyle Green (Cons, Ilkley) said:

“This investment is very welcome. However I’d like to see a more joined up approach. Can we look at bringing the pavilion back to use? At the moment it is at risk due to flooding, and it hasn’t been used for some time.

“There are groups that are interested in using the building.”

The pavilion building has been empty for a number of years after a plan to refurbish the listed building stalled. And concerns over flooding have halted any other recent investment by the Council in the site.

Cllr Green said that with some investment the pavilion could be used by groups including those that were left homeless after a fire destroyed Olicana Cricket Club.

Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said the Lido was a “great attraction for people of the district” and that Council bosses wold speak to Ilkley Councillors about possible future investments.
