Andy Dennis steps up his fundraising efforts for Doctors Without Borders

  • A staff nurse at Harrogate District Hospital is committed to raising much needed money for charity, Doctors Without Borders.
  • Andy Dennis has already raise £100,000 but now wants to double that figure.
  • He's planning a cycle ride from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean.
  • Andy's been volunteering with the group - which helps victims of conflict, disease and other disasters - since 2005.

A committed fundraiser from Harrogate is stepping up his activities, in his mission to raise £200,000.

For over 10 years, Andy Dennis has supported Doctors Without Borders which helps victims of conflict, disease and other disasters.

He's now in process of planning a bike ride from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean - which is in the diary for 2021.

Andy has already generated £100,000 for the charity - but not one to rest on his laurels, Andy - who works at the Endoscopy Unit at Harrogate District Hospital - is now doubling that target to £200,000.

He's been telling Stray FM, why he first got involved with Doctors Without Borders:

"I got involved with Medecins Sans Frontieres - or Doctors Without Borders - in 2005 by working in the A&E department at Harrogate District Hospital.

I watched their response to the Tsumani on Boxing Day in 2004 and I was just so amazed at how the organisation just geared up and responded with no time at all.

"And once I'd seen how people live and the situations people find themselves in through no fault of their own, my eyes were open to the world and the realities that a lot of people faced on a daily basis."

MSF is a non-political, non-religious medical organisation working in around 60 countries.

MSF is a network of volunteers who bring aid and support to victims of armed conflict, epidemics and other disasters anywhere in the world.

Andy volunteered with MSF several times, working in Uganda in 2005 and South Sudan in 2008.

One of his toughest missions was in 2013 when he spent five weeks in Sierra Leone helping combat the deadly Ebola virus.

"I don't know what life I would have had if I had never heard or got involved with Doctors Without Borders.

The working with them is the thing that has motivated me.

Having seen the need in the field over four missions with MSF, that is the motivation that is always with me."

As part of his fundraising efforts, Andy and his girlfriend and fellow nurse Tracey Hill have already completed a 4000-mile fundraising cycle ride from San Francisco to New York in May 2016 .

Conquered mountains, deserts and winds cross the US, the journey took the pair 71 days to complete.
