Castleberg hospital officially re-opens

A hospital near Settle has been officially re-opened.

  • Castleberg hospital near Settle had been at risk of closure.
  • A consultation was held last year to get the views of local people.
  • The local CCG approved plans to re-open it after repair work.

The future of Castleberg Hospital had been in doubt, and a consultation was held last year to get the views of local people.

The local Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) then approved plans to re-open the hospital after work to repair it.

Andrew Gold, Chair of Airedale NHS Foundation trust, cut the ribbon and said:

“There are opportunities like this as Chairman of the trust and a resident of Skipton that make me feel very proud.  It’s being proud to see a facility like this here in the community thriving and making such a difference to the community’s life.”

88 year old Arthur Thomspon from Skipton was getting ready to go home after spending time at Castleberg to recover and rehabilitate from his recent surgery.  He said:

“I’ve really enjoyed it here, it’s a lovely team and a lovely place.”

NHS property Services also marked the occasion by presenting a new TV for the day room for the patients.

60 of their staff raised over £20,000 for their two charity partners Carer’s Trust and The Silver Line; chosen as they help tackle the physical and mental health impacts from being elderly and lonely, or from being an unpaid carer.   They tackled the three tallest peaks of the Yorkshire Dales - Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, a route covering 25 miles.

Rhea Horlock, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, NHS Property Services:

“Earlier this year, 61 of our colleagues braved the wind and rain to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. Alongside the money raised, we were delighted to also support the refurbishment of Castleberg Hospital, one of our own sites just a few miles from where we all stayed for the weekend. We hope that the new TV in the patient dayroom will enhance the patient experience for all those staying there, providing entertainment and an inviting space to socialise and relax.”
