Watch Manager Bruce Reid said:

"It might be loneliness from not having any family around or loneliness from loss of a partner.

"Anyone who feels they're going to be lonely or they can't afford to put a Christmas dinner on the table, we're not going to exclude anyone.

"The fire station operates on a 24/7 basis, we operate a shift system, and it falls that we're on duty on Christmas Day.

"We've got be away from our families and we just thought it would be a good idea to share that time with other people who aren't able to share it with their family."

Bruce believes this is the first time a North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue station has opened its doors on Christmas Day.

The crew are hoping to host up to 45 people in three sittings between 11am and 3pm.

Bruce added:

"If anybody knows anybody then please let them know or get in touch with us on their behalf.

"There are going to be some leaflets and we'll be promoting it on Twitter. But we just want to get the message across to as many people as possible."
