Man dies after being trapped at Cattrick Garrison

  • A contract worker has died in an incident at Catterick Garrison.
  • The man from Richmond was carrying out maintenance on a military vehicle when he became trapped, and died. 
  • Newspaper reports suggest he was crushed to death by the heavy door of the military vehicle,

Police are investigating the sudden death of a contract worker at Catterick Garrison.

The man was from Richmond and was employed by defence contractor Babcock.

The incident occurred at Piave Lines Barracks at around 9.50am on Saturday 18 January 2020. 

North Yorkshire Police spokesman:

"A 58-year-old man from Richmond, a contractor, was carrying out maintenance on a military vehicle when he became trapped. 

"The incident occurred at Piave Lines Barracks at around 9.50am on Saturday 18 January 2020."

No other details have been released officially.

The Sun newspaper quotes an 'insider' who said the man died instantly when he was crushed by a heavy door of a Mastiff troop carrier.

Their report suggests that the vehicle's slow-release mechanism had failed.

Ministry of Defence spokesperson:

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the fatality of a Babcock employee and our thoughts are with their family and colleagues. 

"The MOD will support Babcock and associated agencies to undertake a full investigation.

"Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.”

The incident is being investigated by North Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
