A North Yorkshire charity which supports people after experiencing pregnancy loss is raising awareness.

Reflect is a free pregnancy loss support service that covers York, Harrogate and Selby. Due to growing demand, it will open in Thirsk in the next couple of months.

Over the last 5 years, the charity has supported more than 100 families in Harrogate.

It follows calls to treat the emotional health of women who've experienced a miscarriage with as much importance as physical health.

New research from scientists in London and Belgium has found almost a third of people suffered post-traumatic stress in the month afterwards.

General Manager of Reflect, Tanya Allen said:

"It's not just the loss of a pregnancy, it's the loss of all the hopes and dreams that they imagined this baby would become in the future.

"Pregnancy and baby loss can sometimes be the first big event in someone's life, especially as young women in their 20s and 30s. Starting a family, you don't expect to experience loss. So people can find it a very traumatic experience.

"We can provide that sympathetic, compassionate ear. We can give them the time and space other healthcare professionals might not have."

Women or men can self refer to the service or be referred there by a healthcare professional.

Reflect also provides support for women post-abortion.

Tanya added:

"For a lot of people, talking to family and friends is what they need and their family and friends will be very supportive and help them through their loss.

"For other people, they do need more professional support.

"It may have impacted them recently. It may have been an event that happened 20,30, sometimes even 40 or 50 years ago, but have never had the chance to really work through."
