Skipton and Ripon's MP Julian Smith has been sacked as Northern Ireland Secretary this morning.

It makes him the first casualty of Boris Johnson's much anticipated cabinet reshuffle which is taking place today.

Mr Smith had been in the job since July 2019, when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister.

He's been praised for playing a key role in the restoration of the power-sharing Northern Ireland Assembly and ending the long political stalemate in the province earlier this year.

Before taking on the Northern Ireland role, Mr Smith was Chief Whip under Theresa May, including overseeing a number of crucial Brexit votes.
