Harrogate Borough Council extends tax reduction scheme

Harrogate Borough Council extends tax reduction scheme

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Jacob Webster at 1:20pm 5th March 2020.

The scheme has previously awarded just over £7million in discounts.

  • The decision to maintain it was made at a meeting.
  • The Council leader says they are proud.
  • It followed a recent review.

The move by Harrogate Borough Council will benefit around 7,500 low-income households in the district.

Council leader Richard Cooper said the council is marvellously proud of helping the area’s poorest with money it “could have easily done away with and put in the coffers.”

The decision to maintain the scheme was made by the council’s cabinet members at a meeting on Tuesday, March 3.

It was following a review – and a report put to members said it provides “much needed” support to low income or vulnerable residents.

It is run in line with housing benefits which are claimed by a high proportion of people entitled to the tax reductions. Universal Credit was rolled out in the district in 2016.

The report added:

“The current council tax reduction scheme continues to be fit for purpose whilst the number of Housing Benefit (HB) customers is greater than those claiming Universal Credit.”
