Harrogate councillors approve borough's local plan

Harrogate councillors approve borough's local plan

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 7:33am 5th March 2020.

It includes controversial proposals for 3,000 new homes at Green Hammerton.

  • Harrogate's local plan has been approved at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday night.
  • The decision came after two hours of discussions.
  • Campaigners against proposals for 3,000 new homes at Green Hammerton had urged councillors to remove that development from the plan, but it stayed in.

Councillors in Harrogate have formally given the green light to the borough's local plan.

It sets out how the borough's housing needs will be met for many years to come.

However, it includes controversial proposals for 3,000 new homes at Green Hammerton, which campaigners had urged councillors to remove.

That development will still be subject to the usual planning process.

At Wednesday night's meeting, councillors voted 34 in favour of approving the plan, and three against, with two abstentions.

Members of the 'Keep Green Hammerton Green' group who were against the development there attended the meeting to speak out against the plans.

It's taken the council six years to prepare the local plan, and last month it was judged to be 'sound' by a government planning inspector.

The full council meeting heard without the plan, the borough will be facing a 'free for all' of developments.
