The 'Sights and Sounds day', which is free, is now in its ninth year.

It involves a partnership between councils, museums and volunteers.

There are experiences for all ages in the city, with activities including guided walks, morris dancing, and carol singing.

Linda Furniss, from Ripon Museums, said:

"Families can go along to see all the activities at the cathedral.  All the different partnerships have opened their doors - everything is free, bells will be ringing out, there'll be carol singing, morris dancing - it's a brilliant day."

"Ripon is one of those community-minded cities, it's full of voluntary organisations  - perhaps you don't even know an organisation exists, well today is the day to find out."
