Could it become the Amy Johnson airport?

  • A campaign's begun to rename Leeds Bradford.
  • Netflight has set up a petition to name the airport after Yorkshire-born aviator Amy Johnson.
  • She became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930.

Could Leeds Bradford airport be renamed?

A company called Netflights is calling for it to become the Amy Johnson airport.

The Yorkshire-born aviator was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930.

The company wants more airports around the world to be named after women.

At the time of writing, 160 people have signed the petition.

Netflights claim there are two main reasons for the change:

  • There’s a Yorkshire connection: Amy was born and brought up in Hull
  • The airport is expected to deliver a major terminal upgrade by 2023, the 120th anniversary year of Amy’s birth

Who is Amy Johnson?

Amy Johnson was one of the great early female aviators and, to this day, arguably one of the most famous women in British aviation history.

Her record-breaking exploits in the Thirties made her a legend in her own lifetime, earning her the nickname ‘Queen of the Sky’.

Sadly, her life was cut short at 37. In 1941, on a routine mission for the Air Transport Auxiliary, her plane crashed into the Thames Estuary, and her body was never recovered.
