An 80-year old woman from Wetherby will take part in a wing walk to raise money for a breast cancer charity.

  • Pat Normington will stand on the wing of a historic aircraft to raise money for charity.
  • She's raising money for Breast Cancer Haven, which supported her when she was diagnosed with the disease.
  • Pat has raised more than £3,000 so far.

Pat Normington, who grew up in Burley-in-Wharfedale, will stand on the wing of a Boeing Stearman biplane as it takes to the skies in May.

It's to raise money for Yorkshire charity Breast Cancer Haven.

Pat was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2018.  Following treatment, she was directed to her local Breast Cancer Haven centre in Leeds, where she received counselling and reflexology.

Pat, who has one son and three grandchildren, is now fundraising for the charity by standing on the wings of the plane, which was first designed in the 1930s.

Last year, she also completed a skydive for the charity and regularly hosts other fundraising events. So far, Pat has raised £3,164.

Pat said:

“I want to raise as much as I can. People don’t realise the importance of the service Breast Cancer Haven give. I want to give something back.”

“I’ve always been crackers and I love motorbikes. I enjoyed the skydive and wanted to be back in the air. I saw an advert on the telly for glue – a guy was stuck onto a plane in the air – I thought, I want to do that!”

“My youngest granddaughter thinks it’s amazing and especially at my age. She wants to join me!”
