Children from a Harrogate primary school have helped plant a commemorative tree - to mark five million planted across the world by Bettys.

  • A commemorative tree has been planted by schoolchildren opposite the Crown Hotel in Harrogate.
  • It's to mark the 30th anniversary of Bettys ‘Trees for Life’ campaign.
  • Five million trees have been planted around the world since 1990 as part of the campaign.

It's on the 30th anniversary of its ‘Trees for Life’ campaign.  The tree was planted opposite the Crown Hotel in Harrogate. by children from Western Primary School.

In February 1990, Bettys & Taylors pledged to plant one million trees around the world with the launch of its Trees for Life Campaign - and marked the occasion by planting the first tree on the Stray with local school children.

Since then, thanks to the support of customers and staff, the family business has worked with leading charities to plant five million trees around the world. A recent project, Yorkshire Tree, spearheaded by Yorkshire Tea, helped to plant 1.6 million trees in Kenya and 500,000 across the UK.

'Amazing to reflect on what we’ve achieved'

An elm tree was planted near to the Bettys Harrogate Café Tea Rooms, just a short distance from the very first tree which was planted 30 years ago.

Katy Squire from Bettys said:

“It’s fantastic to share this momentous milestone with local school children and to have the opportunity to talk to them about the importance of trees and the environment."

“As we celebrate 30 years of Trees for Life at Bettys & Taylors, it’s amazing to reflect on what we’ve achieved from that very first tree on the Stray to five million trees planted around the world.

"And it doesn’t stop here – we’re excited for what more we can achieve alongside our staff, customers and charity partners in protecting our planet for the future.”
