Parkruns across Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale cancelled

  • People who're hoping to swap the gym for a park run are now being told the events are being cancelled until the end of the month.
  • There are events in Harrogate, Skipton, Fountains Abbey, Wetherby and Knaresborough.
  • The same action's already been taken in more than 20 other countries.

All parkrun events across the UK have been cancelled up until the end of March.

The global running event had already been cancelled in several countries across the world including France, Germany, Italy, the US and Canada and the move was widely expected here.

There are events:

  • The Stray, Harrogate
  • Conyngham Hall, Bond End, Knaresborough
  • Aireville Park, Gargrave Road, Skipton
  • Wetherby Sports Association, Boston Road, Wetherby
  • Fountains Abbey, Fountains, Ripon

Since then the government has updated advice about social distancing and advised that large gatherings are cancelled.

Chief operating officer at parkrun Global Tom Williams has warned the closures could last even longer.

"In line with public health advice, we have taken the decision to close all parkrun events across the United Kingdom with immediate effect. Initially, this closure will be in place until the end of March, however this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame and we very much expect closures to continue through April at least."

Park runners won't be able to get their regular fix

Tom Williams says he understands the disappointment

"We know that this message may be a difficult one for you to receive, and many people will be wondering what to do without their regular weekly catch-up. Please rest assured that we are working hard to develop our strategy so that we are able to support the health and happiness of parkrunners around the world during this difficult time."

He's also pleaded with people not to make their own plans in Churchill Gardens.

"Remaining active is incredibly important, and we are working on ways to encourage and support that, however please do not arrange group gatherings at your parkrun venues whilst parkrun events are suspended."
