There are calls for care workers to be able to shop during restricted times.

  • The request comes from Home Instead Senior Care
  • Some supermarkets are letting older people shop before stores open to the general public
  • It says its staff, who've been shopping for elderly clients, have been turned away
  • It wants all caregivers to be allowed in

Home Instead Senior Care in Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk, is urging supermarkets to change their policy.

Most supermarkets have been allowing older people to shop for a couple of hours before the store opens to the general public.

Home Instead says it's staff, who are shopping for their elderly clients, have been turned away during these restricted times because they don't work for the NHS.

Now the company has written to supermarkets in the local are asking them to change their policy as their staff are providing a vital service for the community.

One of its directors and co-owners Sheena Van Parys said:

"The supermarkets are doing a super service and they're working extremely hard.

"It would be great if not just our care workers but all care workers could come in at that time to help keep our clients safe, well and nourished.

"Everyone's pulling together. It is worrying, but we've just got to make sure we do the right things and follow government advice.

"If that means we step in and do their shopping for them that's what we'll do. We just need to get that recognition that we're a vital link in the community."

As demand increase, Home Instead Senior Care is recruiting care staff. For more information visit
