'Bring Ben home' campaign underway

  • The family of a man from Gargrave, who is stranded in Lanzarote after having a stroke, have started a fundraising appeal to bring him home.
  • Ben Lord is in intensive care in a hospital on the island.
  • His insurance will not cover his or his wife's repatriation to the UK.
  • They need to raise £20,000 to bring him home.

A desperate fundraising appeal has been started by the family of a man from Gargrave, to bring him home from Lanzarote after he suffered a stroke.

Ben Lord's insurance won't cover his or his wife's repatriation to the UK - which will cost around £20,000.

He had a stroke and a subsequent bleed on the brain while on holiday with his wife, Lyn.

John Baker is a family friend - he says they need as much help as possible:

"The family have gone through the most traumatic eight months you can possibly image. This feels like the final straw for them.

"Ben is a local man - born and bred from Gargrave - a real character in the village. If you ever met him, you'd know him - he's that kind of character.

Everyone just wants him home, where he belongs."

Due to coronavirus, Lyn - although in Lanzarote - cannot see him very often as national restrictions are in place to stop the spread of the infection.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been launched to support Lyn whilst she's out there and to bring Ben back home to Gargrave.

The family have told us all medical costs will be covered by Ben's European Health Insurance Card but other costs regarding their repatriation will not be covered by their insurance.

Friends and family are hoping to raise enough money to bring Ben home where he can be cared for in his home with family around him.
