Coronavirus: MP says it's his "understanding" convention centre WILL be temporary hospital

Harrogate's MP Andrew Jones has told Stray FM it is "his understanding" the convention centre will be turned into a temporary hospital to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

  • It follows reports the site has been chosen
  • However, there's still no official confirmation from the government
  • Andrew Jones MP believes "work will be taking place over the course of the next few days"
  • He also says it will be "the hub for Yorkshire and the Humber"
  • It would become the fifth temporary hospital to be set up in the UK

It follows earlier reports that the site has been chosen to become the fifth temporary hospital in the UK to help serve patients in Yorkshire.

The armed forces have already established the NHS Nightingale hospital in London's Excel - with three other similar sites in Birmingam, Manchester and Glasgow.

Whilst there's still no official confirmation from the government, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, Andrew Jones MP, has told Stray FM he understands the move will go ahead.

He said:

"My understanding is we will be seeing the fifth Nightingale Hospital at the Harrogate Convention Centre.

"I understand work will be taking place over the next few days to get it up and running as fast as possible .

"It will have several hundreds beds and be the hub for Yorkshire and the Humber.

"I haven't been given official confirmation it's happening, but I know a lot of work is happening.

"Quite frankly I just want the NHS to get on with it, I haven't been contacting them to ask can you confim it, I've been saying what can I do to help you look after us better?

"I think it's a very positive thing. This fight against the cornonavirus outbreak is a national endeavour and I'm proud Harrogate is playing its full part in that fight."

Stray FM has contacted the NHS for confirmation.
