The new NHS Nightingale Hospital in Harrogate will be illuminated blue tonight (Thursday, 9 April).

12 trees around the temporary hospital at the convention centre are being decorated with lights - which will be switched on at 8pm to coincide with the clap for carers.

The 500-bed emergency unit, which is set to serve Yorkshire and the Humber, is expected to be ready this weekend.

Harrogate's Lights4Fun is among the businesses getting involved with lighting up the venue in blue for tonight's appreciation.

It's worked with Harrogate Borough Council to donate 720m of blue lights which will illuminate the 12 trees surrounding the hospital.

The big switch-on is to coincide with the clapping of appreciation for our key workers and is part of a national scheme to light up iconic venues for #LightItBlue.

Director of Harrogate Convention Centre Paula Lorimer said:

“It’s been a challenging two weeks since work began at Harrogate Convention Centre. I have been here from day one and witnessed the incredible hidden heroes at work. They have come into work without hesitation to contribute to this remarkable feat of transforming our events space into a temporary hospital.

"All who have worked on the project, including Convention Centre staff from caterers to cleaners, have put their heart, soul, sweat and tears into the transformation, working around the clock to support the NHS.

"I am incredibly proud of my team.”

Work on transforming the venue has been ongoing for two weeks

Army, police and NHS officials have been working hard on transforming Harrogate Convention Centre into an NHS Nightingale.

Many officials have been staying in local hotels and B&Bs whilst the work has been ongoing.

It'll house 500-beds for patients suffering from coronavirus.

It will be the hub for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
