Increase in outdoor fires since COVID-19 outbreak

    • North Yorkshire Fire service claims there's been a big increase in the number of outdoor fires they've attended during lockdown.
    • It's after repeated warnings to avoid them during coronavirus.
    • Firefighters claim in many cases it's people trying to burn rubbish or garden waste.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say there has been a big increase in the number of outdoor fires they have attended during lockdown.

The service says in many cases it is people trying to burn rubbish or garden waste.

North Yorkshire's Chief Fire Officer, Andrew Brodie, said:

"People are clearing out sheds and garages and taking advantage of doing that, whilst they're on furlough and lockdown.

But I would really urge people not to burn it at home, it's just not helping the situation.

We're getting a lot of calls to these now, we've had over 30 in the last four weeks.

I would urge again for people to be responsible if they're going to start rubbish at home, garden rubbish etc.

Think about the neighbours, think about where the smoke may blow.

Preferably just wait and don't do it; and wait and until the proper waste collection services do come back into service at some point soon hopefully."
