Coronavirus: Harrogate charity launches delivery service with a difference

Coronavirus: Harrogate charity launches delivery service with a difference

Published by Lisa Darvill at 11:18am 30th April 2020.

A Harrogate charity has launched a home delivery service with a difference.

  • Disability Action Yorkshire is dropping off jigsaws, books, and DVDs
  • Usually the charity runs a social enterprise scheme which sells donated goods
  • But coronavirus forced it to close
  • Instead it's decided to give the items to those self-isolating

Instead of supplying food and drink to homes around Harrogate, Disability Action Yorkshire is dropping off jigsaws, books, and DVDs to households in and around the town, whilst observing social distancing guidelines at all times.

The charity runs a social enterprise scheme, selling a variety of donated goods, including second-hand furniture, clothes, and ornaments – which gives young, disabled trainees retail and customer service skills.

But since coronavirus forced the facility’s closure, the charity decided instead  to give jigsaws, books and DVDs to those self-isolating, to  help relive boredom brought on by the continuing pandemic.

Jackie Snape, Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive, said:

“Since promoting our special delivery service we have been inundated with orders.  “Children’s DVDs and recipe books are proving particularly popular and we are almost out of jigsaws. Many people are not in a position to afford TV packages and computer games, hence them contacting us.

“There is no charge for our service as we see this as helping the community. We deliver to the doorstep, or the front gate, so there is no contact at all.

“We would like to be able to deliver even more jigsaws, so if anyone has any to donate there will be a box outside the front door of the office on a Monday and Tuesday, so that people can safely drop them off.

“However, we ask that no one makes a special journey to us, but they do it on their journey for their weekly shop, or during their hour’s recommended exercise.”

Disability Action Yorkshire is located at Hornbeam Park Oval, Harrogate HG2 8RB.
