Ilkley MP wants rules changed on church funerals

  • Robbie Moore, the MP for Ilkley, has co-signed a letters asking for church funerals to be reinstated.
  • He is one of 36 MPs who want to fulfill the wishes of the deceased and bereaved, whilst fulfilling government coronavirus guidance.

At the moment, the Covid-19 restrictions mean funerals are only permitted when social distancing measures are in place, with as few people as possible involved.

The Church of England has also advised all of its buildings should be closed as a result of the pandemic too.

A letter's now been signed by 36 MPs who're asking for changes - with the document including the signature of Ilkley MP Robbie Moore.

What does the letter say?

The MPs behind it are concerned that 'the wishes of the deceased and bereaved are not being fulfilled with a proper committal in the church of their wish'.

They've pointed out that funeral services are being permitted at venues other than churches, so there's no reason why they shouldn't be allowed too.
