A Facebook campaign is aiming to keep congestion and air pollution levels in Harrogate down after the lockdown is lifted.

  • The 'Give Us Space' Facebook campaign has been set up to maintain space on the roads around Harrogate.
  • It wants to keep congestion and air pollution levels.
  • The group is urging people to share pictures using the hashtag #GiveUsSpace.

'Give Us Space' has been set up to maintain space on the roads for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with mobility scooters.

They're asking people to send in photos of themselves in a place where they need more space using the hashtag #GiveUsSpace.

The group also want more protected cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings.

Vicky Wild, from the group, said in a statement:

"We don’t want to go back to the congestion and air pollution we had before lockdown, we want something better for the future which gives people the space they need to get around town safely by foot or by bike. We want more space in busy places where people need to physically distance from each other - taking space away from parked cars and giving it back to people. We want more protected cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings, and fewer cars blocking pavements.

"The council has a unique opportunity to trial temporary changes now before the town gets busy again, to see what works and what doesn’t. It has the money to turn these temporary changes into reality too. This can also really support businesses coming back and make our town a much nicer place - every place that has prioritised cycling and walking has seen an increase in business.

"We're asking people to send in photos of themselves in a place where they need more space - pedestrians, cyclists, people with mobility scooters. It's been great getting around Harrogate during lockdown and we don't want to go back to unsafe streets and trying to dodge cars in order to cross the road."
