A meals on wheels service, which delivers hot food to vulnerable people around Harrogate, has been given the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

  • Harrogate & Ripon Food Angels have been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
  • It's for their work delivering hot food to vulnerable people in the community.
  • They will receive the award later in the summer.

It's being given to Harrogate Neighbours for their Harrogate & Ripon Food Angels service.

They deliver hot food to vulnerable people in the community.

The Food Angels were established in 2012 to fill a gap in the local area.  They prepare and deliver over 150 fresh, hot meals every day to the elderly and socially isolated people in Harrogate and Ripon who may not be in a position to cook a meal for themselves.

The award is the highest form of recognition a voluntary group can receive in the UK.  It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

The Food Angels will receive a crystal award and a signed certificate from Her Majesty The Queen, presented by Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Johanna Ropner later this summer. Two volunteers are also invited to attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May 2021.

Sue Cawthray, Chief Executive of Harrogate Neighbours, said:

“We’re delighted to have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. To be recognised to this degree is testament to our incredible volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver such an important service into our community.

"The number of daily meals continues to rise as we collaborate with neighbouring organisations as a result of the Covid-19 crisis to ensure meals are delivered to those in need. I am so thankful to the team at Harrogate Neighbours and the volunteers who continue to selflessly risk their lives to help others.

"We look forward to officially receiving the certificate and award and to celebrating the achievement with all of our volunteers in due course.”
