Thunderstorms forecast for Yorkshire

The Met Office has issued two yellow warnings ahead of potential thunderstorms 

  • The first warning is from 1.30 today until 6am tomorrow 
  • The other covers tomorrow afternoon until 9pm 
  • Craven, Wharfedale and Nidderdale are affected 
  • The Met Office says it could cause flooding and disruption 

Thunderstorms are forecast this afternoon until tomorrow morning, as well tomorrow afternoon. 

The warning areas cover Craven and Wharfedale, with storms forccast today and tomorrow. Parts of the Harrogate District, such as Nidderdale, are being warned about storms tomorrow as well.

What to expect 

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities might become cut off if roads flood
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
