Police say 'reckless suspects' jumped from a moving HGV onto the A1 motorway after officers tried to stop it in North Yorkshire.

  • Five people have jumped from a still-moving lorry as police tried to pull it over at A1(M) at Leeming Bar.
  • A search - involving police dogs - was carried out in nearby fields - but the men fled the scene.
  • Police say 'items of interest' were found inside the vehicle.

Five people have fled a lorry after it was pulled over by the police in North Yorkshire.

Police say a 'suspect HGV' was spotted in Leeming and failed to stop around 1.20am.

The vehicle was still moving, at low speed, when five people jumped out and made off.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman added that 'some items of interest were found within' the HGV.

Nearby fields were searched by police with dogs and the NPAS police helicopter, but none of the suspects have been found.

The HGV has been recovered, and seized for forensic examination, and enquiries are ongoing into the incident.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:

“Jumping from a moving lorry and letting it crash off the motorway was an extremely reckless act that could have had very serious consequences.

Although no suspects have been located at this time, it’s highly likely that our response has disrupted criminal activity overnight.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.”
